We think we may have a role that will suit you
There are a huge range of careers available at Muir, from administrative jobs to strategic management positions. These pages tell you about some of our most popular roles.
- Customer Services Advisor
- Project Assistant
- Community Housing Officer
Customer Services Advisor
Our Customer Services Advisors help customers with questions related to the management and maintenance of their homes. They resolve basic queries about rent payments, housing applications and other issues relating to tenancies.
This job involves dealing with a wide range of people including residents, contractors and council officers. Although much of an advisor's time is spent answering telephone calls or working on a reception desk, they also take care of some administration. They use computers to retrieve information, keep up-to-date records and send emails.
Customer Service Advisors tend to be confident, friendly people who
are very professional when dealing with the public. They're strong
communicators who have a good working knowledge of office procedures
and computers. If this sounds like you, and you have an interest in
social housing, you might be right for this role. It's an opportunity
to learn about housing associations and to receive training that leads
to a nationally recognised qualification. Many use this position as
a starting point for a career in the sector.
Project Assistant
Project Assistants work with the vulnerable people who live in our supported housing schemes. These include homeless people, people with disabilities or mental illness and young people leaving care.
Working to a weekly rota, Project Assistants help these people with their general welfare and provide emotional support. As well as teaching them to look after their physical wellbeing, they encourage residents to get involved in educational, social and recreational activities, and give them life skills training that prepares them for living independently in the community.
Project Assistants help the Project Manager to plan and review the care of residents so they might be asked to write reports and attend meetings. Their job usually includes some administration tasks such as processing admissions and ordering repairs. As a Project Assistant, you have regular contact with other social care professionals, voluntary agencies, and relatives and neighbours of residents.
Although this job can involve dealing with challenging people and working
unsociable hours (including overnight stays), it is very rewarding
and never dull. It suits enthusiastic, proactive people who can empathise
with the needs of vulnerable people. We often hire people who have
experience in a similar role, but if you have the right personal qualities
and are keen to learn, it could be the career for you.
Community Housing Officer
Community Housing Officers look after the management of homes in a particular 'patch' of their neighbourhood. It's a varied role that includes liaising with residents and overseeing the upkeep of properties.
Although they're based in an office, they spend a lot of time
out in the neighbourhoods, talking to residents and acting as a link
between Muir and the local community. A typical day might involve inspecting
an empty property and ordering repairs, meeting a new resident to talk
them through their tenancy agreement, investigating a report of anti-social
behaviour, meeting with colleagues to discuss a new housing development,
and attending a resident meeting in the evening.
To become a Community Housing Officer you need experience of
working face-to-face with customers, a good standard of education (at
least A-level or equivalent) and a strong interest in social housing.
Ideally, you'll have a related qualification or knowledge of welfare
benefits, building construction or housing management. If you enjoy
working in the community and managing a busy workload, this role could
suit you.
